Whenever you lay a new flooring whether it’s laminate or carpet you should check to see if your sub-floor is level as this will determine a good job from a bad. First establish whether your sub-floor is wood or concrete as this will confirm how you need to level it.

With wooden sub-floors there is a choice of two materials. You can either use hardboard or plywood, plywood comes in thicker sheets and gives a far more ridged finish to the sub-floor. Hardboard is relatively thin coming in thicknesses of 1/8 inch which makes it easier to work with but less ridged than the second option which is plywood. Depending on how uneven your floor is should determine which material you use if your sub-floor is very uneven then use plywood.

Where your sub-floor is made of concrete you will have to level it using a self-levelling screed. You will also need to lay a membrane layer over the screed to stop moisture escaping and damaging your flooring.

With the sub-floor completely level you’re now able to start the main job. Begin with fitting your underlay directly to the sub-floor. Always fix the underlay down using either glue or staples to stop it from moving around when you fitting the laminate boarding.

Now your underlay is fitted you can start with the first sections of laminate. With your back facing the door start laying the boards in the far left hand corner of the room. Start from left to right fitting spacers of 5-8mm between the boards and wall. When you get to the last piece on the right you will need to measure this and then cut to size, be sure to leave a 5-8mm spacer on the sides as well as the fronts.

Use as many spacers as you can with the first 3 rows. Having used plenty of spacers your 3 rows should be well and truly fitted so they will not slide around whilst you fit the remaining laminate boards.

Once you have your three rows secure just continue the procedure until you reached the other side of the room where you will need to measure and cut the final boards.
